I ventured back to San Diego this weekend with my beloved. As per usual, it was fantastic. Every time we go we want to stay longer and well, live there. Anyway, we had a bit of an earlier start there which worked out beautifully because unbeknownst to us, there was a dodger vs. padres game happening. This is what happens when you're not into baseball, like, not even a little bit into it. We hit major traffic and while taking the trolley into Gaslamp (also not knowing that the game was IN the Gaslamp. Look, I think I'm a good researcher then stuff like this happens...whatever sports). So the ride there and back was filled with people in blue and random spurts of 'LET'S GO DODGERS!' every few minutes in the streets. It was semi-terrifying. Imagine walking down the street and out of no where a large group of men start yelling. Your natural response is thinking that you are going to die. I don't get baseball people.
Anyway, onto the actual venturing. The main reason we went to the Gaslamp was for a spot called, "Neighborhood" I found it because last time we went we had "Craft & Commerce" and on yelp Neighborhood was suggested just as highly. We got there and it had an equally cool, urban vibe. It was thrown together with random art on the walls and ceilings and chalk boards for their beer selections and pretty damn good music playing the whole time. Ali and I found ourselves completely not paying attention to each other but looking around singing because, you know, romance. They had a pretty good beer selection, I tried a lighter beer because that's just easier to have with a meal, it was "almanac golden gate" First of all, it came in a goblet. Secondly, I finished it with the appetizer, before my food came out... clearly I enjoyed myself. For the appetizer we got herb & garlic aioli fries with the "tijuana sauce" because Ali is racist. Just kidding. Because it was perfect, pico de gallo with hot sauce. I can hallelujah to that.. Mmmm. For actual food I got a beet burger which was straight up pink, not gonna lie it was semi-intimidating to see but was really good. Ali got the black bean burger which was unbelievable. They had a jalapeno sauce which I could easily drown my life in... Also, I'm highly aware that the photo below looks disgusting, but it wasn't until I finished my beer and all the fries that I felt okay enough to realize how perfect everything was. Also, Ali and I cut our burgers in half so we had half of each, so don't you dare judge me... ahem.
Afterwards we took a much needed stroll around the area to the Mission Brewery. Just want to hold up to say that during the stroll there were many parts that looked like pieces of Portland. Specifically the area I lived and a specific route I took. I was trippin'...
Anyway, to progress. Mission Brewery. First of all, it had a sick layout. Brick walls, perfectly shiny everything, chalk boards, and skylights. Are you kidding me? Unfortunately the beer was mediocre. I tried dark seas because I'm dark and mysterious and Ali tried El Conquistador because he's racist. (Honestly, I should stop saying that because he's not... I should probably stop writing a lot of this stuff because half of this blog is me justifying my horrible humor). After we had one unsatisfying beer, we went back to our hotel because we are young and hip and don't act like a newly retired couple... we just wanted to sleep and watch a movie. We picked "The Big Lebowski." Spoiler: I fell asleep half way through.
The next morning we lounged as we always do because when you're doing a getaway why don't relax and just chill for while. Eventually we decided to make something with our lives and went for coffee because coffee snobs. It's really bad. But I guess that's what you get for working in a coffee shop for years and having the good fortune of messing with everything coffee. You know what things should and should not taste like. That's fine because my life was changed. Okay. I'm not being dramatic, it was. We went to the "Coffee & Tea Collective" where I had an almond milk latte because they only have almond milk or whole milk (not gonna lie I was semi judgmental because I like almond milk cold, but when steamed it tends to taste too cardboard-y for me, but I decided to try anyway) and Ali got a cold brew. Standard move for both of us. Now, I am SO glad I got an almond milk latte because it was the best damn coffee I've had in California. I am silenced forever when it comes to me denying almond milk. Ali, the sweetheart that he is, asked the barista what kind of almond milk they use and it's the same kind my work uses. Granted they roast their own beans there, but still, c'mon. God damn perfection. So. To find a better latte than theirs is my new life goal.
Before leaving we had to get breakfast. Just my life philosophy: breakfast. I take it very seriously and I go through great lengths in order to find some exceptional breakfast spots. So, we found one that looked great in La HOLLA! (Guys, I know it's La Jolla, I'm being funny) called "Coffee Cup". The main selling point of this was all the Mexican centered breakfasts and the fact that most were vegetarian, WUT, unheard of. I couldn't help it. I got a SOY chorizo scramble which is now the bane of my existence. I didn't know what living was before I had it. Ali got an avocado scramble because I said that was my second choice and he's a copycat...he's actually perfect, it's fine. I swooned over every single bite, it was not okay how delicious and on point everything was. Also, I realize how disgusting this photo looks too. It kind of just looks like a pile of food, but IT WAS SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT. I was too hungry to take anymore photos. I could clearly never be a food photographer because my inner beast is just like 'ARARARR HUNGRY" I'm such a lady.
Since La Jolla is right on the coast we decided to walk down towards the water and chill before our car ride home. It was wonderful. The weather, the scenery, everything. Just another thing to add for our love of San Diego. We visited all new parts this time around and found ourselves equally impressed as we were last time. It's a place we can see ourselves living and I have a feeling it will happen.
And this wasn't from our trip, it was from a few days before, but perfect depiction of our relationship:
